The Island is Alive With the Sound of Campers!

Our first session campers arrived just over a week ago and camp programming is in full swing! Campers across the island are bonding with friends old and new, participating in exciting activities, and even performing at the opening campfire.

Campers explore the marsh with our Naturalist.

Each day begins with the ringing of the wakeup bell, heading to breakfast, and preparing for the day ahead. During the day, campers are busy crafting, kayaking, archering, dancing, cooking, frog catching, sailing, pig walking, singing, and gaga balling. As evening activities come to a close, campers wind down in their units and reflect on their day.

Creativity and skill-building in the Woodshop!

With all that happens at Camp, we also look for opportunities for relaxation and downtime.

Just a few days into the session, we celebrate Island Fair Day! In the morning, campers set up for the day by baking pies, preparing for their carnival booth, and building a milk carton boat to race. Despite the rainy weather, we enjoyed a fun run across the island and regatta with kayak, canoe, and milk carton races. We ended the day by eating pies and giggling at the carnival!

The Camp Store is always a favorite and this summer it’s in Henderson Commons for the first time!

We closed out our first week with Anchor Day, a chance to come together as a community in a variety of activities. The Mountaineers hosted a reflective Chapel about “The Art of Disagreement” and a number of campers showed off their musical talents at Musicale. In the afternoon, staff hosted exciting Open Activities and the day ended with a delicious Nosebags picnic in their units.

Drama is often filled with improv and hilarity.

The four oldest units—Navigators, Pathfinders, Troubadours, and Mountaineers—are now off on Big Trips (5 day, 4 night trips) and we cannot wait to hear their stories from the trail, mountain, and sea! The younger units are returning from their overnights across the island and ready to celebrate Nell Robinson Day with a color war scavenger hunt.

For many, Dance is an opportunity to learn new things and step outside your comfort zone.

We have had such a wonderful start to the summer here at Camp Nor’wester and cannot wait for what the rest of the summer has to offer!
